Back in June 2026, the modding community was buzzing about an ambitious project designed to bring a much-needed Multiplayer Mode to The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered on PC. The highly anticipated mod was slated for a release this month. Unfortunately, the creator has officially announced that Sony intervened and issued a takedown request, forcing the project to shut down entirely.
While the original The Last of Us featured the beloved 4v4 multiplayer mode known as "Factions," Naughty Dog famously scrapped plans for a similar mode in the sequel. This fan-made mod was poised to finally give PC players a taste of what a Factions experience could have felt like in TLOU Part 2. Now, those plans have been dashed.
This situation serves as a harsh reminder of why developers often keep their projects under wraps until they are fully complete and released. While some publishers embrace community creations, others aggressively protect their IP—regardless of the mod's quality or community demand. Sony has now firmly joined the ranks of companies like Take-Two and Nintendo, which are notoriously strict about unauthorized modifications.
Fortunately, work-in-progress footage of the multiplayer mod is still up on Speclizer’s YouTube channel. It's highly recommended to check out these videos while they remain online to see the impressive mechanics and potential the mod aimed to deliver before Sony's intervention.
This cancellation stings even more given the recent news that Sony is pivoting away from porting its flagship single-player titles to PC, focusing instead on the often-criticized Games as a Service (GaaS) model.
Looking ahead, the community can only hope that other ambitious projects—like the Cyberpunk 2077 Multiplayer Mod—avoid a similar fate. CD Projekt Red has historically been much more mod-friendly than Sony or Take-Two, but in the unpredictable world of game modding, nothing is guaranteed.
