Amiga is a hardware family, not a single console specification. The CDTV multimedia system, CD32 game console and desktop or keyboard computers need different setup and upgrade procedures. Start by recording the model, board revision, installed expansions and display standard. An article that says only “works on Amiga” has not established compatibility with your machine.
Identify the platform before powering it
Read the rear or bottom label and photograph the power connector and available video outputs. Use the original Commodore documentation for that model to identify its connections. The CD32 technical release includes model-specific schematics and connector information; the CDTV service manual is a different document for a different machine. Do not choose a replacement power supply merely because a plug fits.
Record whether an accelerator, memory board, storage expansion or replacement ROM has been installed. A seller's description may omit modifications hidden behind a cover. Photographs of the actual board and expansion labels are more useful than an assumption based on the outside case.
Set a stock baseline
- Inspect the case, cables and external connectors while disconnected from power.
- Confirm power requirements against the exact model documentation.
- Use a known compatible display connection and controller.
- Test a known-good disc or boot medium before adding another expansion.
- Write down which functions work, including audio, controls and loading.
Change one part of this setup at a time. A video adapter problem can resemble a dead console, while an unreadable disc can resemble a failed drive. A working audio CD is a useful observation but does not prove every game-data read or title-specific feature works.
Compatibility questions to ask
| Item | Required information |
|---|---|
| Game or demo | Target model, chipset, CPU, memory and required controls. |
| Storage expansion | Exact connector, board compatibility and its own boot requirements. |
| Video setup | Signal type and timings accepted by the display or converter. |
| WHDLoad installation | Required system software, memory and the particular install's requirements. |
A desktop installation with extra memory is not equivalent to an unexpanded CD32. The project's special WHDLoadCD32 build explicitly targets a plain CD32 and has different limits from regular WHDLoad. Treat those distinctions as part of the hardware inventory.
Choose a practical route
For original console use, prioritize a stable disc drive, suitable controller and supported video path. For a computer installation, map the operating system, disk interfaces and memory before importing large software collections. For preservation on a modern PC, configure an emulator for the actual machine rather than selecting the largest CPU and memory values available.
Continue with media and storage preservation before changing disks or saved data. Use upgrade and repair planning for hardware work. The older Amiga overview and technical-documentation index remain useful references alongside this directory.
