The Gizmondo is a handheld game console from the seventh generation of video game consoles. It was produced by Tiger Telematics. It was released in Britain and the USA in 2005, but was already discontinued in 2006 after poor sales, controversies and the eventual bankruptcy of Tiger Telematics.

Remove Stickiness of the Shell

The Gizmondo's shell was coated in a rubberized material that was popular in the 2000s for "soft-touch" surfaces. This soft-touch surface overtime disintegrates to a sticky mess by now for most devices around this era, making handling the device very unpleasant. Using isopropyl alcohol and a cotton or microfiber cloth, this sticky, soft-touch residue can be nicely removed. Soaking the cloth (not dripping) and carefully scrubbing the outer shell (disassemble the device first) removes the sticky surface. What remains is a smooth plastic surface. Be careful with the parts that have printing underneath them (like the Gizmondo logo) to not also remove the print after removing the soft touch surface. When done somewhat carefully, the prints on the shell will stay perfectly there, while the sticky surface is completely removed.

Battery Replacement

Most batteries of the Gizmondo are dead by now. In the following, different potential solutions are discussed.

Motorola SNN5749A

Replacement batteries of the Motorola SNN5749A battery fit perfectly by chance. Currently those batteries can still be easily bought, thus making them a convenient replacement.

Soldering a New LiPo Pack to the Old Battery PCB

The Gizmondo battery pack can be opened carefully by removing the sticky tape. This reveals a LiPo pack, a plastic frame and PCB with the connector pads. The dead LiPo pack can be desoldered from the PCB. A new LiPo pack can soldered into place (INSERT PICTURE WITH POLARITY HERE). LiPo packs with a maximum size of 34.5 mm x 51 mm x 7 mm will fit into the old plastic frame.
