The NEC PC-9800 series is a line of Japanese 16-bit and 32-bit personal computers manufactured by NEC from 1982 to 2003. It is a non-IBM compatible x86 system that runs a PC-98 exclusive MS-DOS. It is able to run FreeDOS, FreeBSD, Linux, as well as an officially ported Windows 95, Windows 98 and Windows 2000. Many games are "self booting" and can run without DOS. Some models also have the N88-BASIC operating system built in.

2.5MHz / 5MHz Compatibility

For some games, you may encounter visual issues, duplicated screens, or an actual error message indicating that you need to set the PC98 BIOS to run in 2.5MHz mode. To fix this, reset the PC98 (or emulator) while holding the HELP (or END) key. It will bring up the bios and you can change the BIOS setting.

Games that require 2.5MHz:

  • Rusty
  • 東方靈異伝 ~ The Highly Responsive to Prayers (Touhou 1)
  • 東方封魔録 ~ the Story of Eastern Wonderland (Touhou 2)
  • 東方夢時空 ~ The Phantasmagoria of Dim.Dream (Touhou 3)
  • Guruguru Racer 100[1]
  • Puyo Puyo[2]
  • Burning Dragon[3]
  • Tonight[4]
