Backups, updates and care

Copy Playdate game data before resets or migrations, apply official system updates and use documented recovery and maintenance practices.

Make progress a separate backup

A copy of a game package preserves the software, while a copy of its data preserves the player's history. Plan for both. Before an update, device transfer or reset, record the system version and the games whose progress matters. Keep dated backups rather than replacing the only previous copy every time you connect the device.

Panic's backup procedure uses USB Data Disk mode. Connect a data cable, select Settings, System, Reboot to Data Disk and copy the entire Data folder to the computer. Safely eject the mounted device and press A to return. For a device transfer, Panic documents copying the saved Data folder contents into the new device in Data Disk mode.

Keep an untouched copy before testing any restore. Inventory the copied folders, note the date and device, and check that the computer finished every transfer. An additional copy on separate storage protects against losing both device and computer together. Do not place account credentials in the same publicly shared archive as a bug report.

Update through the supported menu

Connect Playdate to Wi-Fi and open Settings, System, System Update. Panic recommends leaving the device on, unlocked and ideally connected to USB power while installation runs. Record the installed version after restart and test one important game plus its saved progress. Read a game's own notes if an update changes its minimum system requirement.

If downloading fails, record the network and displayed error before changing settings. Compare ordinary connectivity with update behavior, and keep the existing working installation until the supported update completes. A failed network request is not evidence that an arbitrary system image should be copied into Data Disk mode.

Recovery is a separate decision

Panic's Recovery Mode boots a stable system copy and can be entered using A, B, Menu and Lock together, or an offered error-screen option. It provides a route to retry an update or consider a reset. Read the screen carefully and preserve accessible data before choosing a destructive operation. Contact Panic when the documented route does not resolve the fault.

Care for the physical device

Use a soft lint-free cloth with external cables disconnected, keep liquid away from openings and avoid spraying cleaners onto the device. Check the crank and USB connector visually without forcing them. Record unusual resistance, intermittent charging or physical damage before further testing so a repair request describes the actual problem.

For long storage, Panic recommends roughly half charge and recharging at least every six months. Add that check to a collection maintenance calendar. Store the device where the crank and buttons will not bear weight, and retain its cable in a labeled pouch. Revisit battery condition before a long trip or lending the device.

A practical maintenance record

  • Device identifier, system version and last successful update.
  • Date and location of game-package and Data backups.
  • Known working cable and charger, with any charging fault recorded.
  • Games checked after maintenance and the saves used for verification.

Continue with game installation or development once the device is in a known working state.
