OrbitOPL Toolbox is a modern, cross-platform application for organizing and managing your PlayStation 2 (and PlayStation 1) OPL game collection. It provides a user-friendly interface for importing, browsing, and maintaining your ISO/VCD/APPS libraries on Windows, macOS, and Linux.

Information

OrbitOPL Toolbox was created to fill the gap left by existing OPL library managers like OPLManager that lack macOS and Linux support. Built with modern web technologies (Electron, TypeScript, and Angular, styled with Tailwind CSS & daisyUI), it aims to offer an intuitive, cross-platform experience for managing PS2 and PS1 game collections. The project is open-source under the GNU General Public License v3.0 and welcomes community contributions. Development is ongoing with regular updates and feature additions based on user feedback. On Arch Linux the app is also available via the AUR as orbitopl-toolbox-bin and orbitopl-toolbox-git. Current Version: v1.2.1 This page covers how to install and use the application, the key features, and future improvements.

Features

  1. Multi-System Library: Manage PS2 (DVD & CD), PS1, and APPS (homebrew) all in one place, with system tabs, live counts, search, sort (title/GameID), and grid/list views. Recognizes UL (split/fragmented) games.
  2. Importing: Import PS2 ISO/ZSO images, convert PS2 CUE/BIN (including multi-track) to a single ISO, convert PS1 CUE/BIN to VCD with an auto-generated POPStarter launcher, and import homebrew ELF executables. Game IDs are auto-detected by scanning the disc image, and batch imports run as a queue with live progress.
  3. Artwork Fetching: Download cover, icon, and screenshot art (COV/ICO/SCR) for PS1 and PS2 games, either one at a time or for the entire library
  4. Compression: Compress PS2 ISO files to ZSO (LZ4) to save disk space, single game or in bulk, with an option to delete the original after conversion
  5. Per-Game Configuration: Edit OPL per-game settings (CFG/<GAMEID>.cfg) directly from the UI — display title, compatibility modes, and VMC slot assignment — while preserving any other existing keys
  6. Virtual Memory Cards (VMC): Create, list, and delete OPL-compatible virtual memory cards (8/16/32/64 MB)
  7. File Maintenance: Detect invalid or malformed filenames, bulk auto-correct them (discovering game IDs and renaming in one pass, with optional artwork download), and switch between legacy and new OPL naming conventions
  8. Modern UI: Built using Electron with a clean, user-friendly interface
  9. Quality of Life: Auto-reconnect to your last mounted library on launch, a real-time log viewer with verbose mode, and a built-in update check

Installation

Download the latest release from the GitHub Releases page.

Windows

  1. Download the .exe installer (or the portable .zip if you'd rather not install)
  2. Run it — the installer walks you through setup; the .zip just needs extracting, then run OrbitOPLToolbox.exe
  3. If Windows SmartScreen appears, click "More info" → "Run anyway" (the application is safe but unsigned)

macOS

  1. Download the .dmg file for your architecture:
    • arm64 for Apple Silicon - recommended and tested
    • x64 for Intel Macs
  2. Open the .dmg file and drag OrbitOPLToolbox to your Applications folder
  3. Open Terminal and run the following command to bypass Gatekeeper quarantine (required for unsigned apps):
xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine /Applications/OrbitOPLToolbox.app
  1. Launch the application from your Applications folder

Linux

  1. Download your preferred format based on your distribution:
    • .AppImage - Universal format, no installation required
    • .deb - For Debian/Ubuntu-based distributions
    • .zip - Portable archive
  2. For AppImage: Make the file executable and run directly
  3. For .deb: Install using your package manager (sudo dpkg -i filename.deb)
  4. For .zip: Extract and run the OrbitOPLToolbox executable

Arch Linux users can alternatively install via the AUR (orbitopl-toolbox-bin or orbitopl-toolbox-git).

How to use

Once open, the app presents a bottom bar with a "Mount Directory" button; pointing it to your OPL Library dir makes the app start scanning for pre-existing games. If the folder isn't already laid out for OPL, the app offers to create the required folders (CD, DVD, VCD, POPS, APPS, ART, CFG, VMC) for you. Enable Reconnect on launch in Settings to have the app re-mount this drive automatically next time it starts. Following, you will find a simple set of steps to do simple tasks using this tool:

Download Artwork for your already-existing library

  1. Mount the directory
  2. Watch how the library gets scanned
  3. click the "..." button on the game card (or on the top of the page if you want to download all the available artwork for the full library)
  4. click "Fetch Artwork" / "Download Artwork for All Games"

Artwork is saved into the ART/ folder as GAMEID_COV / _ICO / _SCR.

Import a Game to your library

  1. Mount your directory
  2. Navigate to "Import Games"
  3. Choose your disc type:
Type Accepts Result
PS2 DVD .iso / .zso Copied into DVD/
PS2 CD .bin / .cue Converted to a single .iso in CD/
PS1 / POPS .cue Converted to .vcd, plus a POPStarter launcher in POPS/
App / Homebrew .elf Copied into its own APPS/ folder with a title.cfg launcher
  1. Click the button to select your game file(s)
  2. Check if the auto-discovery has correctly found the GameID and GameName for the game you want to import
  3. Choose if you want the automatic artwork download (and, for PS1, the POPStarter prefix - XX. for USB/MX4SIO or SB. for an SMB network share)
  4. Click "Start Import"

Compress an ISO to ZSO

ZSO is an LZ4-compressed disc image that saves space while staying OPL-compatible.

  1. For a single game: use the game's "..." menu → Convert to ZSO
  2. For the whole library: use the top-right "..." menu → Convert all PS2 ISOs to ZSO

You can choose to delete the original .iso after a successful conversion.

Configure a Game

  1. Open the "..." menu on any PS2 game (or PS1 launcher) → Game settings
  2. Set the display title OPL shows, toggle compatibility modes, and assign a VMC to Slot 1 or Slot 2

Any other keys already present in the .cfg file (DMA settings, etc.) are preserved untouched.

Virtual Memory Cards

On the Memory Cards page you can create a blank VMC (8/16/32/64 MB), view all existing cards, and delete ones you no longer need. New cards are formatted by OPL on first use, and can be assigned to games from each game's settings dialog.

Fix Invalid or Mislabeled Files

The Invalid Files page lists images OPL wouldn't recognize (usually a non-standard filename).

  • Rename Tool (per file) — enter the game ID and title manually, optionally fetching artwork
  • Bulk Auto-Correction — reads every invalid disc image to discover its game ID, then renames everything into your chosen convention, optionally fetching artwork as it goes

Rename to a Naming Convention

Switch a single game ("..." → Rename to convention) or the whole library (top-right "..." → Rename all games to convention) between:

  • New — <Title>.iso (OPL reads the ID from the disc)
  • Old — <GAMEID>.<Title>.iso (maximally compatible with older OPL builds)

OPL folder layout

OrbitOPL Toolbox reads and writes the standard OPL directory structure:

OPL_ROOT/
├── CD/ — PS2 CD-format games (.iso / .zso)
├── DVD/ — PS2 DVD-format games (.iso / .zso)
├── VCD/ — PS1 games (.vcd)
├── POPS/ — PS1 POPStarter launchers (.elf) + POPS VMCs
├── APPS/ — Homebrew apps (one folder each, with title.cfg)
├── ART/ — Artwork (GAMEID_COV.png, GAMEID_ICO.png, GAMEID_SCR.png)
├── CFG/ — Per-game OPL settings (GAMEID.cfg)
└── VMC/ — Virtual memory cards (.bin)

Game IDs follow the PS2 format XXXX_###.## (e.g. SLUS_123.45); the region is derived from the prefix.
