HDMI, HDR, 120 Hz and audio troubleshooting

Validate the entire display chain, distinguish output mode from game frame rate, and troubleshoot HDR, VRR, receivers, capture devices and headset audio.

A console, HDMI cable, receiver, capture device and display form one chain. Every stage must support the requested signal. A television marketed as “120” may accept that refresh rate only at certain resolutions or on particular inputs. A monitor may advertise its highest rate through DisplayPort even though the Xbox uses HDMI. Record the exact input and enabled mode before replacing a component.

Build a supported baseline

Xbox Wire: display capabilities and troubleshooting describes checking 4K TV details under TV & display options and matching the display's input capabilities. Start with the console connected directly to the display using a suitable cable. Consult the display manual for any enhanced HDMI input setting. For the specific 4K/120 case, use Xbox Support: 4K at 120 Hz and the manual for the actual input being used.

  1. Photograph the display model, selected HDMI input and cable path.
  2. Remove receivers, switches and capture devices temporarily. Test an ordinary supported lower-resolution 60 Hz signal.
  3. Once stable, increase resolution or refresh rate one setting at a time.
  4. Enable HDR, VRR or another optional feature separately and repeat the same game scene.
  5. Reinsert each intermediate device individually, testing both cables and its output setting.

Refresh rate, frame rate and HDR are different

A 120 Hz output tells you the link refreshes at that rate; the game still needs a supported performance mode to render more frames. Conversely, some games favor image quality at a lower rendering rate. Check the title's settings and release notes rather than expecting a display setting to double every game automatically. Performance comparisons should use the same scene, game version and mode.

HDR needs correct signal interpretation and calibration. If the picture looks washed out, compare SDR and HDR deliberately, check the display's input mode and use the console's calibration tools. Do not change color range, contrast and several tone-mapping options simultaneously. A screenshot viewed on another device may not show the same HDR behavior as the actual television.

No picture or intermittent signal

If the console has power but no image, check the selected input and test another suitable HDMI cable and display. Inspect the connectors visually for a bent shell, debris or a plug that no longer seats properly. Do not probe powered connector pins. If the dashboard appears at a conservative mode but disappears at a higher one, suspect a capability or signal-integrity problem before declaring the graphics hardware dead.

A capture card can constrain the negotiated mode or behave differently during protected media playback. Keep the direct-display baseline and compare game output with the affected media application. Record whether the failure appears immediately, after warming up, or during a resolution change; each gives a repair provider more useful evidence than “HDMI broken.”

Audio routing and delay

Record where sound should emerge: TV speakers, receiver, soundbar or controller headset. Begin with a basic supported output format before testing a surround or spatial format. A silent center speaker can reflect channel configuration; delayed audio can reflect processing in the television or receiver. Compare the same clip with a direct speaker route, then restore one processing option at a time.

Use controller and headset checks for microphone or chat issues. If the console cannot reach its dashboard on any tested display, continue with startup recovery, preserving the distinction between a visible startup error and absent video.
