Vectrex identification, overlays and first setup

Establish a vector-display baseline, identify the power region and preserve overlays without confusing their function with a video modification.

Source review: October 11, 2026. Match manuals, project releases and wiring diagrams to the actual model and board revision before selecting a modification.

Identify the original system

Vectrex is a self-contained vector-display console with its own screen. Record the case label, mains rating, controller and any existing cartridge modification before applying power. The commonly archived GCE field-service manual describes a particular North American power arrangement; its voltage information should not be generalized to every international unit. Use the actual label and the corresponding service documentation. A plug adapter changes connector shape and does not itself convert the supply voltage.

Establish a baseline without a cartridge

Mine Storm is built into the original console, so it provides a useful initial software test without an external game. Check startup, sound, the analog stick, all four action buttons and the reset control. Photograph the same scene at a modest brightness before comparing cartridges. If a system cannot run its built-in game, investigate that baseline first rather than using a multicart menu as the only evidence of operation.

Understand the overlay

The original display draws monochrome vectors. A translucent game overlay supplies artwork and color regions in front of the screen; it is not a color CRT conversion. Fit the appropriate overlay using its original tabs without bending brittle plastic, and store it flat and protected when removed. For preservation, keep an overlay scan, the game instructions and the cartridge identity together. A reproduction overlay may differ in color, translucency or alignment, so label it as a reproduction in photographs and collection records.

Describe vector symptoms precisely

Record whether the whole image is present, displaced, distorted, unusually dim or collapsed into a line or point. Note whether text and moving objects change in the same way and whether sound continues. A camera can create flicker or brightness differences that are absent to the viewer, so compare a recording with direct observation. An overlay can also affect perceived brightness. Remove unnecessary variables before concluding that the console needs internal calibration.

Choose the next step from the evidence

Use an external game only after the built-in baseline is understood, and turn power off when changing cartridges. A failure limited to one cartridge belongs in the cartridge guide; a fault in the whole image belongs in hardware and display triage. Keep the enclosure's ventilation clear and support the unit on a stable surface. Before shipping a unit for service, photograph it and protect both the heavy display and the loose controller. A useful first-setup record lists what was tested, which accessories were used and which symptom remains, giving a technician a starting point without an unnecessary series of undocumented adjustments.
