Call of Duty: Black Ops 1 Glitch Returns on PS4 & PS5
Players jumping into the newly released PlayStation ports of Call of Duty: Black Ops 1 and Black Ops 2 are discovering that a long‑standing, game‑breaking glitch from the original versions is still present — even after 16 years and a $40 re‑release fee.
Classic Games, Minimal Changes
Activision recently dropped both titles onto PS4 and PS5 as straight ports. They arrived with no major updates, improvements, or fixes, preserving the original gameplay experience from 2010 and 2012. For many fans, this nostalgia is welcome, but it also means the old problems came along for the ride.
Old Issues Still in the Game
Because these ports received almost no rework, glitches and exploits from the original releases remain untouched. This includes issues that players have been dealing with for over a decade.
On Xbox platforms, the backward‑compatible versions have long been plagued by hackers and modded lobbies, which is why cross‑play between Xbox and PlayStation isn’t available. Unfortunately, similar problems are now appearing on PlayStation as well.
The XP Lobby Glitch
One of the biggest problems resurfacing is the XP lobby glitch. Just like on PS3, certain players are exploiting a bug that lets them rapidly farm experience points by repeatedly killing themselves instead of playing normally.
This glitch is most common in Ground War, but it has begun spreading into other modes as more casual players leave and exploiters become more noticeable. When multiple players abuse the glitch in the same match, it can completely ruin the experience for everyone else.
Why Players Are Frustrated
The issue isn’t as severe as full‑blown hacker lobbies, but it’s still a major disruption — and it’s something Activision could have fixed. Instead, the glitch remains untouched, even though it’s been known for years.
Players are especially frustrated because Activision is charging $40 per game, plus $30 for each Season Pass, while leaving infamous, game‑ruining bugs in place. Many feel that if the company isn’t going to update the games, it should at least give PS5 users the option to disable cross‑play to avoid problematic lobbies.
What Needs to Change
The ports are still fun for many players, and the nostalgia is strong — but the XP glitch and the growing presence of hackers threaten the long‑term health of the re‑release. Fans are calling for Activision to address the issues or provide tools to avoid them.
