Establish a working base console
Connect the Jaguar alone using a known working video cable, controller and original cartridge. Confirm picture, sound and input. Then switch off and remove power before changing the hardware. This short test creates the comparison you will need if attaching the CD unit changes the behavior. Record the display input and any scaler settings so they remain consistent.
The original Atari CD user's guide shows the add-on aligned over the console's cartridge opening. Inspect the mating connector for obvious debris, damaged contacts or broken plastic. Align the unit without forcing it or rocking it by the lid. The add-on's upper cartridge slot is a separate connection that should also be inspected. Never insert or remove the add-on while the console is operating.
Verify power from exact labels
The console and CD add-on need their documented supplies. Check the adapter label against the exact device requirement: output type, voltage, polarity, connector dimensions and current capability. Do not infer compatibility from connector fit. If a replacement supply has an undocumented lead or unclear label, verify it before a powered test. Label approved adapters so they cannot be accidentally swapped with other equipment.
The captured Jaguar polarity protection article is relevant to base-console repairs, but a protection modification does not make arbitrary supplies acceptable. The original Atari CD schematic is an advanced diagnostic reference for the add-on. Do not take an internal rail label on a schematic as the required external adapter output.
Connect and test in stages
- Place the base and attached CD unit on a stable level surface with room for the lid.
- Connect the normal Jaguar display route and a controller.
- Connect the individually verified power supplies.
- With no ordinary game cartridge selected for boot, follow the owner's instructions to start a known good Jaguar CD game.
- End the session normally and test audio-CD operation separately.
Use only clean, undamaged discs and seat them as the guide illustrates. A disc not secured on its spindle is not a valid read test. Do not defeat the lid mechanism to observe the laser during operation. A failure to recognize a disc should be recorded as a symptom with its exact screen state and mechanical sounds, not immediately attributed to a worn pickup.
Check the upper slot and storage separately
Switch off before inserting a cartridge in the upper slot, then confirm that it boots. A Memory Track is storage for supported CD games; its operation is separate from ordinary cartridge game saving. Preserve existing data before exploring management options. Use the title's instructions for its save support.
Photograph the final cable route and write down the adapter identities. Keep enough slack to open the lid without stressing the display cable or power sockets. If a modern GameDrive is being used instead of the physical CD unit, consult its own compatibility instructions rather than assuming the same attachment arrangement. To dismantle the original system, shut down, unplug, remove any cartridge and detach the add-on carefully without pulling on the lid or its cables.
