Preserve cartridge identity and progress
Photograph the cartridge label, region and any unusual shell or board markings before dumping it. Record the reader, firmware, tool version and settings. Read the ROM more than once and compare hashes; a stable repeated result provides evidence that a loose connector or read error did not change that capture. Retain the original bytes separately from translated, patched or header-adjusted copies. The existing Genesis backup guide provides routes for compatible cartridge readers and saves.
Native saved data is a separate artifact from the game ROM. Determine the cartridge's save hardware and export method rather than assuming that every game uses the same battery-backed memory. Keep at least two copies of the untouched save before battery work or a restore experiment. Test restoration with expendable progress and preserve format-conversion notes. A flash-cart state is not automatically a portable native cartridge save.
Configure a flash cartridge for this console
Use the manual for the actual cartridge generation and installed firmware. The Mega EverDrive Pro manual explicitly identifies Nomad limitations: stock SMS mode is absent, and CD audio requires cartridge-port audio connections the stock handheld lacks. 32X software still needs the corresponding hardware. These distinctions prevent a feature advertised for the cartridge family from being mistaken for a feature of every host console.
Begin with ordinary Genesis software, then add special modes individually only when the documented hardware requirements are satisfied. Follow the cartridge's procedure for committing native saves to storage before removing the card or shutting down. Copy the relevant save folders to a computer periodically. Record any modified Nomad audio or SMS support, together with the guide and board photographs, in a separate compatibility note.
Build actual Genesis homebrew
SGDK is a real C development kit for Mega Drive and Genesis software. Follow its installation instructions, pin the release used, and build the supplied template or a small sample before adding your own assets. Keep resource definitions and source files in version control. Emulator execution is an early check; load the resulting Genesis ROM through a supported flash cartridge for a Nomad hardware test.
| Test | Nomad-specific observation |
|---|---|
| Controls | Every button, held combinations and external controller behavior. |
| Presentation | Text legibility and motion on both the handheld and television. |
| Sound | Normal audio versus features requiring additional cartridge audio wiring. |
| Persistence | Native saves survive an ordinary restart and copy correctly. |
Archive the ROM hash, SDK release, flash-cart firmware and handheld modifications with test results. Reproduce a bug on a small build before blaming a screen replacement or console revision. A release claim should state which stock or modified hardware was tested. Revisit setup if the same fault also affects known commercial cartridges.
