Controllers, USB storage, display and boot diagnosis

Separate controller mapping, storage access, HDMI and service failures, and establish a known-good local baseline before resetting a Ouya.

Ouya troubleshooting should separate local hardware behavior from unavailable historical services. A controller that pairs, a USB drive that mounts and a game that launches are three different tests. Record the working launcher state and preserve accessible files before changing settings.

Build a simple baseline

  1. Use the appropriate power arrangement and a direct HDMI connection to a known input.
  2. Start with one controller and no unnecessary USB accessories.
  3. Confirm that the launcher responds to navigation.
  4. Open an existing offline application that previously worked.
  5. Add one storage device or controller at a time and repeat the same test.
  6. Record whether the failure follows the accessory or the console.

A display showing the launcher proves more than a blank screen, but not that every application or online service is healthy. Conversely, a network error during setup does not establish a failed HDMI or controller board.

Controller mapping

Identify the exact controller and connection mode. Test directional controls, face buttons and menu behavior separately. An Android application may use different input assumptions from an Ouya-specific game, so pairing alone does not establish correct button mapping in every title.

Record the application's version and mapping configuration. If a controller works in one application but not another, compare that software's supported input path before replacing hardware. For multiple players, verify assignment and navigation deliberately rather than inferring player order from the time each controller connected.

Storage diagnosis

Back up an existing drive before formatting or using it with another device. Record its format, capacity, power needs and what the console can actually see. A USB accessory requiring more power or a filesystem unsupported by the selected environment can fail without indicating a defective console port.

Use a known-good modest test device and a disposable file first. Verify read access, write access where intended, clean shutdown and rereading the result. Do not move the only copy of a save collection onto untested media. Preserve directories referenced by a launcher or application when reorganizing files.

Collect diagnostic evidence

Where ADB is already available through a documented connection, Google's documentation provides shell and diagnostic tools. Use them to record the symptom rather than immediately modifying system files. Keep relevant logs concise and remove account or personal data before sharing them.

The ADB guide distinguishes an application package from private data and ordinary storage. A backup of readable shared files does not guarantee recovery of every application setting, so assess important software individually before reset.

Boot and network boundaries

If the console enters initial setup and cannot contact original services, consult the community server maintainer's separate factory-reset procedure. The documented setup route differs from adding the normal endpoint file to an already configured console. Repeated resets can leave the same dependency unresolved.

A fault that persists with known-good power, display and local accessories may need hardware assessment. Record what changed and retain the last working software configuration. Do not present a random firmware flash as a universal repair for controller, HDMI, storage and server errors.

Use preservation and revival for supported community service configuration. For a wiki contribution, state the model, firmware, accessory and repeatable result so another owner can distinguish a tested combination from a general compatibility promise.
