Inspect the console before powering it
Read the exact electrical label and compare it with the local supply. An import's plug fitting a socket does not prove the input voltage and frequency are supported. If voltage conversion is necessary, select equipment rated for the console's documented input and load. Do not use an undocumented travel adapter as evidence of voltage conversion. This guide gives no universal mains specification because the actual machine and any prior power modifications must be identified first.
Place the tower on a stable surface with clear ventilation and room for the disc lid. Inspect the cord, casing, lid, spindle and visible connectors for damage. Do not operate a unit with exposed mains wiring or liquid damage. The original NEC instruction booklet shows the normal connection and start/end sequence. Internal power-board work belongs to a qualified repair procedure, not first-use setup.
Connect one display route at a time
Identify the labeled video and audio sockets and choose a cable intended for that output. Use a known working display input or a documented compatible scaler. Begin with a simple supported connection before introducing switches, capture devices and adapters. Photograph the connections so the same route can be recreated during troubleshooting. A black-and-white or unstable image warrants checking output type and display support before selecting internal video modifications.
The PC-FX hardware research project is a source for board and peripheral details. An internal register description or chip capability is not proof that a particular signal exists on an external socket. For an advanced video mod, require a board-specific original procedure and documented electrical output conditions rather than borrowing a PC Engine pinout.
Check controllers deliberately
Use a controller explicitly identified for PC-FX and consult the developer controller documentation for protocol and mode behavior. Test the directional pad, numbered buttons, Run, Select and mode switches with known compatible software. A switch can alter how input is reported, so a game-specific behavior is not automatically a dirty contact or damaged port. Record the active mode when reporting a fault.
- Connect the display route and controller with power off.
- Start the console and confirm menu navigation.
- Inspect the backup manager without choosing format or delete.
- Load a clean original PC-FX disc and reach gameplay.
- Check audio and controls, then end the session normally.
Preserve the baseline
If the console prompts to initialize storage, pause long enough to establish whether existing saves need preservation. Follow the PC-FX storage guide before destructive management actions. The FX-BMP is a separate storage accessory; connect and remove peripherals only in their documented powered state.
Record console label, display route, controller identity, game edition and any voltage-conversion equipment. If a test fails, keep that arrangement fixed while changing one verified component. Test another known good original disc before suspecting the pickup. Retain the normal menu and game-load observations as a baseline for later repair or homebrew work.
