Prepare the exact configuration
Write down the model and region of the Genesis or Mega Drive and the CD expansion. Locate the matching owner's guide before handling the expansion connector. The top-loading Model 2 arrangement and a front-loading unit do not use an identical mechanical sequence. The original Sega CD Model 2 user's guide illustrates attachment, accessories and normal operation. Read those drawings at full size rather than relying on a seller's assembled photograph.
Start with a known working base console and its ordinary video cable. Confirm cartridge play, controller response and the display input. Then switch off and unplug the equipment. Place the assembly on a level surface with room for the tray or lid. Check the expansion connector for damaged contacts, foreign objects and bent shielding without scraping it with metal. If it does not seat naturally in the documented direction, stop and recheck alignment.
Verify every adapter independently
Identify which adapter belongs to the base console and which belongs to the CD unit. Compare the adapter's output type, voltage, polarity, current capability and connector dimensions against the exact hardware label and manual. Connector fit is only one of these checks. This guide intentionally does not give one universal power specification: different Sega console families and integrated variants must not be combined by appearance.
Label approved supplies near their plugs so they cannot be exchanged accidentally later. If a supply is damaged, undocumented or has a replaced lead, have it verified before use. Do not improvise a split power lead simply because both devices have round sockets. The CD expansion and base console need a supported powered configuration during operation. Modern cartridge CD emulation has different rules described in Krikzz's Mega EverDrive Pro manual, including bus conflicts with an attached physical CD unit.
Follow the signal path
- Attach the CD unit and required supports while all power is disconnected.
- Connect the documented video route from the console system to the display.
- Choose the audio route shown for the exact base console: television audio and a separate stereo system are different arrangements.
- Connect any required audio mixing cable, keeping inputs and outputs correctly oriented.
- Connect the verified supplies and start the system using the owner's procedure.
Commission the assembled system
First observe the BIOS screen without attempting a repair. Next use a known good original game from the intended region, and listen for both synthesized game sounds and disc music. Missing one component of audio suggests a routing problem worth checking before suspecting a failed audio chip. Use a commercial audio CD as a separate test; reduce speaker volume before reconnecting audio leads.
Photograph the final wiring and record every cable identifier. Keep connectors free of strain when opening the lid or tray. To remove the add-on, end the session, switch off, unplug, and reverse the documented assembly steps. Recheck the base console after disassembly. This creates a useful baseline for later troubleshooting and prevents a loose connection from being mistaken for an optical-drive failure.
