Steam Deck models and first checks

Identify LCD or OLED hardware, record the installed software and storage, and establish a working baseline before selecting upgrades.

Identify the hardware family

Steam Deck is a handheld PC running SteamOS, and ordinary desktop applications do not require a console jailbreak. Valve documents separate LCD and OLED hardware specifications. Use the label, display type and system information together when identifying a used unit; the installed SSD capacity alone is unreliable because an owner may have replaced it. Record the model, serial number privately, SteamOS channel and version, internal drive size, microSD capacity, charger and any installed modifications before comparing guides or ordering replacement parts.

Understand the practical differences

The LCD model has a 7-inch 1280 × 800 display with a maximum 60 Hz refresh rate and a 40 Wh battery. OLED has a 7.4-inch 1280 × 800 HDR OLED display with refresh rates up to 90 Hz and a 50 Wh battery. Both are PCs, but internal parts and disassembly procedures are not interchangeable. Match a repair guide to the hardware family, then check the specific part revision. Availability and retail bundles are separate from technical identification; this article does not use a current storefront listing as a complete historical model inventory.

Make a useful baseline record

On a working unit, test charging, Wi-Fi, speakers, the headphone connection, both trackpads, touch input, sticks, triggers and grip buttons. Open the controller test before deciding that a game-specific control problem is physical damage. Run a familiar game from internal storage and, if available, another from microSD. A difference between these tests gives you a starting point for diagnosing storage rather than replacing unrelated components. Photograph any screen defect at a fixed brightness so later comparisons use the same conditions.

Separate software experiments from repairs

Begin with the stable software configuration and one known-good application. Installing launchers, changing Proton versions, adding desktop tools and adjusting controller layouts are separate changes with separate rollback paths. Keep a brief log of each modification and its result. If a used unit includes unknown scripts or plugins, back up important local data before replacing the operating system. An unexplained crash is insufficient evidence that every existing modification is faulty, so first reproduce it with a clean test and record the error.

Plan data and accessories

Check whether each important game uses Steam Cloud, and preserve local saves for games that do not. Keep recovery media and another computer available before an internal storage upgrade. A USB-C dock, external keyboard and display can simplify troubleshooting, but test basic charging and handheld operation without the dock first. Use model-specific specifications for power and display accessories instead of assuming every USB-C product provides the same features. This first-check record becomes the reference for the storage, recovery and repair guides in this section.
