Identify what still works
Record whether the device reaches firmware, the boot selection screen, SteamOS, Gaming Mode or the desktop. Also note whether the failure began after an update, plugin change, storage replacement or another operating-system installation. These cases require different next steps. A computer that opens the desktop but fails in one game usually needs application diagnosis before a complete operating-system replacement. Remove optional peripherals for an initial test, use reliable power and preserve the exact error message rather than relying on a photograph of a generic black screen.
Understand the recovery choices
Valve documents several recovery paths, including resetting local user data, rolling back to a previous operating-system version and installing or reimaging SteamOS. Their data consequences differ, and the current recovery article states that the install/reimage/repair option wipes device data. Do not infer preservation from the word repair or from an older screenshot. Read the description displayed by the current tool before confirming. If the device still boots, use that opportunity to copy important saves and desktop files before experimenting with any option that can erase storage.
Create recovery media carefully
Obtain the SteamOS recovery image through Valve’s support instructions and use the image-writing tool described there. Writing an image is not the same as copying its compressed download onto a USB drive; it replaces the selected target’s contents. Disconnect unnecessary removable drives from the preparation computer, identify the intended device by capacity and label, and wait for the writer to finish. Keep a note of the download date and image source. A spare USB-C adapter or dock can help distinguish failed media from a connection problem.
Boot and choose deliberately
Follow the current Valve boot instructions for the Deck rather than applying a generic desktop-PC shortcut. Keep the charger attached and allow the recovery environment time to load. Confirm that you are operating on the internal drive you intend to recover. If unexpected partitions or multiple drives appear, pause and identify them before writing anything. A dual-boot installation, replaced SSD or unusual partition layout deserves additional review because assumptions from a factory configuration may no longer match the device. Keep recovery logs if the process reports a failure.
Confirm recovery before restoring everything
After recovery, establish normal charging, network access, login, controller input, suspend and one small game installation. Restore important personal data before downloading a large library, and verify that saves belong to the correct account. Reintroduce desktop tools and plugins one at a time so a repeated problem has a clear trigger. Keep the recovery media and external backup until the machine has been used normally. A successful boot confirms progress, but it does not verify a replacement drive, every peripheral or every game configuration.
