A system transfer is a migration of user and console data. It is different from inserting a game card, copying a storage card or downloading one cloud save. Plan it before completing the destination's initial setup. The wrong transfer choice can erase the source or require restarting setup on the destination, so read the screens for the exact source and target combination.
Collect the prerequisites
Nintendo's Nintendo: moving to Switch 2 describes the move from Switch to Switch 2 and requires Internet access and a linked Nintendo Account on at least one source user. The detailed Nintendo: system-transfer procedures also covers transfers targeting Switch 2. Confirm both systems' current software requirements, account sign-in access, power and network reliability before starting.
- List every user, linked account and important game save. Include accounts used by other household members.
- Open each important game and note recognizable progress. Check its cloud-save support separately.
- Export irreplaceable captures where possible. Identify captures that remain on the old storage card.
- Check bundled software has been registered to the intended account before the source is initialized.
- Choose whether you will have both systems together or must hand over the source before receiving the target.
Local transfer when both systems are available
Use the destination's initial setup transfer flow and the source's System Transfer to Nintendo Switch 2 control. Keep both nearby and follow the current onscreen instructions. Local communication does not remove the Internet requirement. You can choose software redownload and album-data options; distinguish successful user-data migration from background installations that have not finished downloading.
The source deletion rules are data-specific. Nintendo describes supported cloud-save data for linked users being copied while some unsupported saves or unlinked-user data are moved and removed from the source. Some wording in the reviewed support article also gives a broader deletion warning; treat the actual confirmation screens for your source/target as authoritative and do not assume local transfer preserves every original save. Verify any title with special transfer behavior before committing.
Server transfer when the source must leave first
The documented server option uploads data and initializes the source. It affects all users on that console. Record the displayed download deadline, the initiating account and the successful upload state before trading in or selling the machine. The destination must retrieve the data through the matching setup flow and account. Server migration storage is not the same service as a permanent game-save archive.
If you already completed initial setup on Switch 2, Nintendo explains that a system transfer may require initializing the destination and setting it up again. Do not erase newly created destination progress without first reviewing its backup options. Manual save migration or supported cloud recovery may fit a narrower goal better.
Prove the result
- Confirm every expected user appears with the correct linked account.
- Install one important title and compare in-game progress with the source record.
- Verify captures and chosen download options, then check remaining free storage.
- Reconfigure settings that do not transfer, including Bluetooth audio pairings and controller mappings as documented.
- Check each special-case title with its own current publisher procedure before declaring the migration complete.
See cloud-save planning and storage upgrades for the separate data categories. Keep account records and transfer confirmation details until the destination is fully usable.
