History
TeamUIX began in 2004 as a collaboration between Gcue and JbOnE through xboxdash[.]net's #xboxdash IRC channel. Operating first under the name tHc (the Hacking crew), the team expanded on Gcue's TrueBlue MSDash patches to create a community-driven mod of the original Xbox Dashboard. A refined release, tHc Lite, followed with features like skin customization, reboot/shutdown functions, and screenshot support, made possible in part by community contributions, notably from fuck_db.
As the project gained popularity, a parallel variant called BlackStormX (BSX) emerged, inspired by early "rezn8" dashboard prototypes. This split the scene into two camps but ultimately pushed both efforts forward. JbOnE later announced tHc Final, which evolved into XboxDash.NeT and led to the release of XboxDashNext BugBash Beta. Around the same time, the BSX team explored integrating their work with the neXgen Dashboard.
Soon after, a teaser introduced user.interface.x (UIX), a dashboard built on the MS Dash base featuring a file manager, FTP, game ripper, and three selectable styles (Stock, tHc, BSX). UIX marked the merger of tHc and BSX under the TeamUIX banner. Despite early bugs, it was praised for its flexibility and customization. Other dashboards like Dash2GAM and NeoDashX emerged around this time, with contributors like fuck_db also involved. Later code leaks confirmed widespread collaboration across teams.
Later in 2004, TeamUIX began developing UIX2, a full rewrite that replaced XIP structures with folders, introduced modular scripting, and dropped FTP in favor of Xbox Neighborhood support. However, leaked and unstable builds branded Enigma led to confusion and scene blacklisting. This breach, combined with waning interest in the original Xbox, caused many developers to step back. Public releases stopped, though development continued privately among a few IRC veterans.
Revival
In 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic, renewed interest in the original Xbox modding scene emerged, partly spurred by hardware developments like Ryzee119's OpenXenium chip. A post on r/originalxbox referencing UIX sparked efforts to reconnect with former developers and rediscover lost tools and documentation. This led to the informal reformation of TeamUIX as a preservation and development project, with several original contributors reconnecting alongside newer members.
A key catalyst was contributor headph0ne, who handed over a massive personal archive of UIX, UIX2, tHc, BSX, commemorative builds, skins, and development files he had been preserving for nearly two decades. This archive underpins a large portion of the historical documentation and build comparisons now available in the UIX History repository.
These efforts ultimately led to the relaunch of TeamUIX and the release of UIX Lite, initially as UIX Ultra Lite, a streamlined game launcher for the 5960 dashboard designed to preserve compatibility with Insignia (the community Xbox Live replacement). By August 2024 it had evolved into the team's mainline project, rebranded simply as UIX Lite.
Concurrently, a reverse-engineering project called Theseus was developed, reconstructing the full Xbox dashboard engine from the retail binary using Ghidra. Theseus now powers both UIX Lite on original Xbox hardware and UIX Desktop, a native port of the same engine to macOS, Linux, and Windows.
