Super Mario Galaxy Native PC Port: Play at 60 FPS Without an Emulator

Super Mario Galaxy is Getting a Native PC Port: Enter AstroCore

For years, PC gamers have relied on Nintendo Wii emulators to play Super Mario Galaxy and its sequel. More than a decade after those early emulation days, the iconic 3D platformer is finally getting an unofficial native PC port, completely removing the need for an emulator.

Introducing AstroCore by Luma’s Workshop

Developed entirely by humans without the use of AI tools, this unofficial PC port is codenamed AstroCore. The project is spearheaded by the decompilation team at Luma’s Workshop. While an official release date has not been announced, the team has released a trailer showcasing Super Mario Galaxy running flawlessly on PC at a smooth 60 FPS.

Super Mario Galaxy 2 is Next

The good news doesn't stop with the first game. Luma’s Workshop has confirmed that once AstroCore is polished and finalized, the decompilation team will shift their focus to creating a Super Mario Galaxy 2 native PC port. Soon, PC players will be able to experience both classic Wii titles natively.

Why Nintendo Can't Shut Down This PC Port

A major concern with fan-made Nintendo projects is the threat of legal action. However, the AstroCore project is designed to be DMCA-proof. Like other recent PC recompilations, this port will not include any copyrighted in-game assets. Players must provide their own legally obtained game files for it to work. Because the developers are only distributing the decompiled engine, the project is expected to remain safely online for a long time.

The Golden Age of Unofficial PC Ports

AstroCore joins a massive wave of classic console games being recompiled for PC. Gamers can currently download native unofficial PC ports for a variety of retro hits, including:

  1. Super Mario 64 and Mario Kart 64
  2. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask
  3. Perfect Dark and GoldenEye 007
  4. F-Zero and the Donkey Kong Country SNES trilogy
  5. Jak & Daxter and Crash Team Racing
