The 2X-Pro supports 15 kHz input only

The 2X-Pro as well as the 2X-MINI support 15 kHz input only. This means that 240p, 480i for 60 Hz NTSC and 288p, 576i for 50Hz PAL are supported. 480p input from consoles like the Gamecube, Wii or Xbox are not supported. The only 2X product that accepts 480p input is the (discontinued) 2X-Pro Multiformat.

For consoles that use 480p for most of their catalogue you can get better picture quality with a 480p capable product like the RetroTINK-5X Pro or a YPbPr to HDMI transcoder that supports 480p input. There are also console specific solutions. For example GCVideo HDMI adapters like the Carby for Gamecube or the ElectronWarp HDMI adapter for Wii.

The RetroTINK 2X-Pro is not compatible with 480p input

480p input splits the screen in two, there are also color issues and noise

PAL N64 using an NTSC S-Video Cable

PAL (European / Australian) N64 consoles usually require a special S-Video cable, that has additional resistors built in, to bring its overly hot video signal down to normal levels. Connecting a PAL N64 with a standard NTSC S-Video cable to a 2X-Pro results in clipping of bright colors. The 2X-MINI can display S-Video from a PAL N64 at the correct brightness level with a standard NTSC S-Video cable.

Note that not all PAL N64 output S-Video. PAL Funtastic and Pikachu models as well as French consoles may be limited to composite video.

2X-MINI High Frequency Luma Filter

The 2X-MINI applies a high frequency luma filter to its S-Video input when the COMB switch is set to "Auto". This is mostly helpful for PAL N64, but it can also reduce noise when using lower quality S-Video cables with other consoles.

High Frequency Luma Filter Example

COMB switch set to "Retro", Improperly grounded S-Video cable displays noticeable noise

RetroTINK-2X Classic 3d Printed Case

The RetroTINK-2X (discontinued) is barebone and the look doesn't appeal to everyone. A custom case for the RetroTINK-2X Classic has been created as an alternative by Laser Bear Industries.

As an FYI, all of Greg's designs can be purchased from his web store here:

The RetroTINK-2X Case consists of a few 3d Printed parts:

RetroTINK Bottom V1.4.stl
RetroTINK Top V1.4.stl
RetroTINK Buttom.stl (print two of these)

You will also need some extra items to complete the setup.

The only part that might be a little bit difficult is installing the light pipes, which you can use a pair of pliers and push the filament through the led holes and use flush cutters to get it to set flat with the rest of the case. Then, you can use a hot air rework gun to get the clear filament to be clear on the ends that were cut.

The case will assemble with the original 3mm nuts from the RetroTINK-2X Classic plexy case and the 3mm screws you obtained. The RetroTINK-2X Classic board will just go inside before you screw it all together.

Rad 2x Cables

RAD2x-1024x576.jpg

The "Retro Analog to Digital 2x" cables, aka the "RAD2x" are retro HDMI cables supporting most consoles before the Xbox, PS3 and Wii. They are zero lag devices that process the unique "240p" signals of classic consoles properly. They include a switchable filter that smooths out the graphics, which can improve the look for early 3D games and for softening 480i games.
