テレビ CANVAS

The KV-18TR1 was part of Sony's "テレビ CANVAS" (TV CANVAS) series. The テレビ CANVAS system offered three main functions, referred to as "CANVAS 1, 2, and 3":

  • CANVAS 1 - Clock Function: The television will display a real-time clock along with the date and day of week.
  • CANVAS 2 - Calendar Function: Users could access a full screen calendar, functional from year 0000 to 9999.
  • CANVAS 3 - Programming Function: The TV features a program reservation system that can automatically change channels at specific times and dates, it also features a power block feature that prevents the TV from turning on during specified times.

Sony's Trinitron CANVAS features
All of these features were controlled through Sony's remote control system and displayed as attractive on-screen graphics. The concept was that your TV screen became like a "canvas" for displaying useful information beyond just broadcast content.

Black Trinitron

The KV-18TR1, alongside other television sets in Sony's 1984 line up, were the first Sony Trinitron TVs to feature Sony's Black Trinitron tube.
By incorporating a tinted glass and an improved electron gun, they achieved superior contrast ratios, wider viewing angles, and a deeper black level. Black Trinitron tubes were considered a significant improvement over the standard Trinitron displays, becoming a flagship feature integrated into many Sony Trinitron televisions.

A/V HIT

The KV-18TR1 also features Sony's "AV HIT" (known as the A/V Uniconnector outside of Japan). The A/V HIT connector carries composite video with mono or stereo audio. The connector is proprietary, featuring a 3.5mm jack with an additional external shield/sleeve resembling a phono/RCA jack. A/V HIT appeared on a plethora of Sony devices ranging from their televisions to their HitBit MSX computers.
