Backward compatibility is a separate feature
Playing the PS4 version on PS5 is different from installing a native PS5 edition. Keep the edition in your troubleshooting notes: the same title can have two installations, distinct save handling, different controls, and different content entitlements. Start by identifying the game version you are launching rather than treating the box art as sufficient evidence.
Sony says the overwhelming majority of PS4 games are playable on PS5, while warning about unavailable features and unexpected behavior in some titles. Selected games benefit from Game Boost. A PS4 disc requires a working disc-drive configuration and must remain inserted when playing; an original disc-less Digital Edition cannot read it. Sony also notes that PS3 discs are unsupported and lists other backward-compatibility limitations in its official compatibility guide.
Upgrades are title-specific offers
Some eligible PS4 purchases have a PS5 upgrade, but Sony explains that an offer can be free, paid, or time-limited and requires an internet connection. For an eligible disc upgrade, the PS4 disc still serves as the play requirement after downloading the PS5 version. Region/account conditions can matter. PS4 games obtained through PlayStation Plus are not automatically eligible unless the offer says otherwise. Check the upgrade guide and the title’s current offer before spending money or changing firmware.
If you own both versions, Sony documents selecting the game in Game Library and using its options to choose the version. Make a habit of checking the PS4 indicator beside a title. When investigating performance, measure the same scene in the same edition and note the game’s graphics settings. Comparing a patched PS5 edition with an unpatched PS4 installation can produce a misleading conclusion about backward compatibility.
Storage and transfers
PS4 games can run directly from compatible USB extended storage, including an appropriate drive previously used with PS4. Native PS5 games can be stored there but must be moved back to console storage or suitable M.2 storage to play. USB extended storage is not a general FAT32/exFAT backup drive, and formatting erases its existing contents. Read Sony’s extended-storage guide before converting any drive.
Sony’s data-transfer documentation provides a network copy workflow from a PS4 or another PS5. It requires account preparation, the same network, and supported system-software conditions. During a transfer, keep both consoles powered and avoid changing network settings. This official workflow may conflict with preserving older firmware, so decide the firmware goal first instead of accepting every preparation prompt automatically.
Move progress deliberately
- List the source edition, user account, and last saved progress. Preserve the original console or backup until testing succeeds.
- Choose a supported transfer or saved-data method. Backups and Save Data explains why PS4 and PS5 saves need different treatment.
- For a PS5 edition, read the publisher’s own import requirements. Do not delete the PS4 edition until you know whether it is needed for migration.
- Launch the intended edition and check a recognizable checkpoint. Verify DLC and settings separately from progress.
- Keep a short record of the migration. If something is missing, that record helps distinguish a wrong edition from a wrong account or failed copy.
Peripherals and experiments
Controller and VR requirements depend on the edition and title. Sony documents DualShock 4 support for supported PS4 games, while PS5 games have their own controller requirements. Original PS VR games require their appropriate headset/camera setup; the PS5 HD Camera is not a substitute for the PS4 camera used by PS VR. Check the manufacturer’s compatibility statement for specialty controllers before purchasing an adapter.
Official backward compatibility does not imply that an arbitrary PS4 homebrew payload works on PS5. A PS4 executable, exploit, or patch can depend on a different runtime and security environment. Use each project’s explicit platform support and consult Homebrew Tools when evaluating community software.
