Separate the three software families
An ordinary Genesis cartridge, a 32X cartridge and a CD 32X disc are different products. A 32X cartridge needs a functional 32X attached to a supported base console. A CD 32X disc additionally needs the appropriate CD hardware arrangement. The original Sega instruction manual lists the supported categories. A disc carrying a similar title to a cartridge release is not evidence that the two versions use the same hardware.
Read the packaging and record the exact edition before a test. Keep a known working original 32X cartridge available for comparison. If that works and another cartridge does not, investigate region, contacts and game-specific requirements before concluding that the expansion failed. If cartridge games work but a CD 32X title fails, investigate the CD subsystem separately.
Region and timing are separate requirements
Consult the existing region-locked 32X games reference and 32X region modification article. Record the base console region, video timing, expansion revision and any modifications. A bypass that changes a software region check does not prove that all video modes or timing assumptions now match. Do not use a board-specific switch diagram on an unidentified revision.
Modern flash cartridges can also alter region behavior. The Mega EverDrive Pro manual notes that hardware MegaKey is unavailable with a 32X attached. Keep its warnings enabled while commissioning a setup. If a cartridge offers an override, that override is an experiment with a stated configuration, not proof of universal compatibility. Record the exact firmware and settings in a bug report.
Know what “32X support” actually means
| Claim | Required distinction |
|---|---|
| Plays 32X ROM files | A real compatible 32X is still required on the cited cartridges. |
| Plays Sega CD images | The CD core's bus and hardware restrictions must be checked. |
| Plays CD 32X images | Requires explicit support for the complete CD 32X arrangement. |
| Plays Master System files | Master System mode through an attached 32X is a separate compatibility issue. |
Krikzz's manual states that its internal CD core cannot operate with a 32X and that ordinary Master System mode is blocked by the attached expansion. Terraonion's MegaSD manual describes its own CD 32X arrangement using an MSDEXP adapter. This is a specific hardware matrix, not a generic feature of all flash cartridges. Verify adapter documentation and availability before planning a purchase.
Make compatibility results reproducible
For each test, write down the title and edition, image checksum where relevant, original or modified software status, base model, 32X revision, region, display route and cartridge firmware. Try the unmodified supported configuration first. If testing authorized homebrew, retain the creator's hardware instructions and track layout. Repeat a cold boot, gameplay and normal reset. Record whether failure occurs at boot, a particular level or a disc transition. These details make a compatibility report useful and prevent a cable or missing component from becoming an inaccurate claim that an entire game is unsupported.
