Map the route before connecting anything
Write down the exact base-console model and select its diagram in the Sega 32X instruction manual. The base console's video output must reach the 32X through the appropriate link arrangement, and the final display connection must follow the documented 32X route. A television cable and an inter-unit video link have different jobs even when their connectors look related. The existing 32X video output guide provides more detail.
Start by confirming normal cartridge operation on the base console alone. Turn off and disconnect power before inserting the expansion or changing cartridges. Inspect the cartridge opening, link sockets and plug alignment. Install the required spacer or shielding components as shown for that base console. Hold the assembly by the appropriate structural parts; do not use the cartridge or attached cable as a lever.
Match the supply to the device
Check the 32X adapter against the hardware label and matching manual: output type, voltage, polarity, connector dimensions and available current all matter. Verify the base console supply separately. An additional physical Sega CD needs its own supported arrangement. A matching barrel plug does not establish compatibility, and an undocumented replacement supply should be verified before it is used.
Label the supplies at the device end. Route them so the adapters and inter-unit cable cannot pull the stack sideways. Leave ventilation openings clear and keep the system on a stable surface. If a cable does not fit with gentle alignment, check that it belongs to that model; forcing a plug can damage the socket or hide an incorrectly keyed accessory.
Commission in stages
- Assemble the supported base console and 32X with power disconnected.
- Install the appropriate inter-unit video link and the final display cable.
- Connect the verified supplies and a known working controller.
- Insert an original 32X game intended for that region and start the system normally.
- Check actual mixed graphics and audio, then repeat a cold boot.
Record which display input, scaler preset and cable were used. If ordinary Genesis graphics appear but 32X graphics do not, this is useful evidence about the signal path; it is not an instruction to replace a specific chip. Return to the external connections and verified software before opening the unit.
Add other hardware only after a baseline works
A flash cartridge can introduce its own mapper, region and reset behavior. The Krikzz manual documents 32X cartridge support while listing restrictions on its CD core and in-game menu. The MegaSD manual has a separate support matrix. Use the exact manufacturer's documented combination, and record cartridge firmware with your setup.
If adding a physical CD expansion for CD 32X games, shut everything down and follow both manuals. Do not leave unsupported devices attached and unpowered to work around a conflict. After assembly, test the ordinary 32X cartridge again, then test the CD title. This isolates problems introduced by the newly added component. At the end of a session, switch off before removing cartridges or rearranging any part of the stack.
