Switch game and accessory compatibility

Check the official per-title compatibility database, upgrades and special accessory requirements while keeping software compatibility distinct from exploit or internal-part compatibility.

Switch 2 plays many physical and digital original Switch games, but compatibility is title-specific and can change with updates. A game that launches can still have a listed issue in a particular mode. Check the official result for the exact title before selling your original hardware or buying an older accessory for a special feature.

Use the per-title database

Nintendo: game compatibility database is the official starting point for compatible games and known issues. Nintendo: playing Switch games on Switch 2 confirms the broad feature while directing third-party title questions to the publisher. Record the date, game version and system version when testing a reported issue. Do not turn one successful play session into a claim that every feature is verified.

  1. Search the exact title and distinguish its original Switch edition from a separate Switch 2 Edition.
  2. Read listed launch, gameplay and accessory conditions.
  3. Check the publisher's patch notes for any fix that the game needs.
  4. Install that update through the supported route and repeat the specific affected scene or feature.
  5. If the issue persists, preserve a concise reproduction with version numbers instead of a vague “not compatible” report.

Free improvements versus paid editions

Nintendo's transfer overview lists selected free updates and paid Switch 2 Edition upgrades. Their content differs by game. A faster machine can also behave better within the original game's constraints, but that is not proof of a new native edition or a guaranteed uncapped frame rate. Check the title's actual performance mode and patch notes before making a graphics claim.

Compare portable and TV modes using the same software build and scene. If only one mode fails, test its accessory and output path separately. Keep save format and upgrade entitlement in your record; a different edition can produce a different icon or licensing prompt while using related game data.

Older controllers and special peripherals

Nintendo: Switch accessory and feature compatibility documents supported wireless use of original Joy-Con and the original Pro Controller. Original Joy-Con do not attach to Switch 2 and need an appropriate separate charging method. Special games using Ring-Con or other original Joy-Con features can require the original controllers. New Joy-Con 2 features, such as mouse input, are not supplied by an older controller just because it pairs.

Consult controller and mouse controls for a detailed input test. Check all required accessories before discarding the old console; it may still be part of your charging or title-specific setup. A general USB adapter compatibility statement should not be expanded into a promise that every legacy game mode works.

Accounts and save continuity

Use the correct purchasing account to recover compatible digital titles. Physical Switch game cards remain a separate license route, and game updates or paid DLC may still need downloading. A system transfer handles user data; copying an old microSD installation folder onto a new Express card does not establish a supported software or save transfer.

Before continuing a long playthrough, verify the checkpoint in the new system. Use save backups for supported cloud titles and system transfer for broader migration.

Do not extend compatibility into security claims

Running a retail Switch game says nothing about running a Switch exploit payload, custom firmware, modchip or internal replacement part on Switch 2. Those need independent platform-specific evidence. The research guide explains how to assess a release without confusing a software version number with a hardware allowlist.
