JTAG, RGH, and Bad Update console users should take extra precautions before connecting to Xbox Live. Modified consoles can be banned immediately or within a few hours of connecting, especially when no stealth protection is used.
Stealth server services are designed to reduce the risk of detection by making a modified console appear closer to a retail console when connecting to Xbox Live. However, connecting to Xbox Live with a modified console is never 100% safe, and your console’s keyvault may still be banned.
Alternatively, you can install a dual NAND mod to use both a retail NAND and a modified NAND. The retail NAND can be used for Xbox Live, while the modified NAND can be kept for homebrew and other unsigned content. If you only intend to play offline, you can also block Xbox Live using this guide.
Of course, with a Bad Update setup, you can just let the console boot into the default retail state and use Xbox Live normally.
The most common reasons for bans include:
- Connecting to Xbox Live without a stealth server
- Unlocking achievements from homebrew or unreleased games while signed in to Xbox Live
- Modding in public lobbies and being reported by other users
- Swapping DVD drive model of the console (such as changing a BenQ branded drive to a Hitachi) without spoofing Keyvault OSIG
Signing in to Xbox Live while using a custom dashboard- This appears to have not be an issue for a long time, as Stealth servers spoof all homebrew to appear as the Xbox 360 Dashboard anyways.
If your console gets banned, you will need to use a KV (Keyvault) from an unbanned console. A guide on extracting and changing your KV can be found here. Some stealth servers provide a NoKV mode. When this mode is enabled, the client does not need to use their own unbanned KV, as the service handles KV access on the server side.
