This page describes the file systems used by the Xbox as well as what each directory is on the hard drive. Most custom dashboards have built in file browsers and provide an FTP service for connecting to the Xbox from another device.
File Systems
The Xbox uses various file systems for storing games, user content, and more.
- FATX (File Allocation Table for Xbox) is the storage file system used on hard drives, memory units, USB System Drives, and xlaunch.fdf files.

- XGD (Xbox Game Disc) is the file system used on Xbox CD/DVD Media.
Root
All file browsers for the Xbox, along with FTP servers, will show each partition that's currently being used.
- C: is the contents of the retail Xbox dashboard, along with a custom dashboard executable on hardmodded consoles. Do not modify anything here unless you know what you are doing.
- D: is contents of current CD/DVD in the disc drive.
- E: is the directory for game saves, DLC, and title updates. It's also used as the default homebrew app install location.
- The
TDATAfolder is for DLC, title updates, and homebrew data, whereas theUDATAfolder is for save files.

- F: and G: are extra storage directories created with XBpartitioner or FATXplorer. G: is often created if hard drives larger than 128 GB were used, but isn't required on Rocky5's softmod or custom BIOSes that have modern LBA48 patches.
- H, I, J, K, L, M, N, O: show the contents of the plugged in memory units or USB drives.
- X, Y, Z: are the cache partitions. Some homebrew applications utilize these partitions for certain functions as well.
