Recreating the glory days with your friends?

Want to shout at someone for screen peeking right after getting tea-bagged?

You’re in the right place!

This guide walks you through two ways to set up a Halo 2 LAN party using either stock or modded Xbox consoles.

Stock Setup

Note: How to get all DLC installed on stock systems needs to be added.

Running Halo 2 on an unmodified Xbox is straightforward, but you’ll be missing a couple of maps and the extra game types that were available on Xbox Live if you only stick to official disc releases.

What You’ll Need

  • A Halo 2 disc per console
  • Two or more original Xbox consoles
  • A networking switch or router
  • One Ethernet cable per Xbox
  • (Optional, but nice to have) Halo 2 Multiplayer Map Pack disc

Setup Instructions

  1. Plug in your Ethernet cables from the Xbox to your Ethernet switch (or router).
    • See Networking Setup below if needed.
  2. Put the Halo 2 disc in the Xbox.
    • See "How to Play" to get a System Link game going.

Multiplayer Map Pack Setup Instructions

The Halo 2 Multiplayer Map Pack disc installs Auto-Update 3, which includes three map packs (nine multiplayer maps) and the v1.1 title update. More information regarding auto-updates can be found on Halopedia.

An alternative to using the Multiplayer Map Pack disc is to download both the latest Title Update and all 4 Halo 2 Map Packs through Insignia.live. See Online Play for more information.

  1. Launch Halo 2. This will create the necessary folders on your hard drive.
  2. Eject Halo 2 and put in the Multiplayer Map Pack disc and choose "Multiplayer Expansion" > "Update Halo 2" (this is the v1.1 Title Update), then choose the correct language option for your Halo 2 disc. You'll get a screen showing the selected language and it will install and return you back to the main menu when finished.
  3. Install the following map packs; "Bonus Pack", "Killtacular Pack" & "Maptacular Pack".
    • Bonus Pack contains: Containment and Warlock maps
    • Killtacular Pack contains: Sanctuary and Turf maps
    • Maptacular Pack contains: Backwash, Elongation, Gemini, Relic & Terminal
  4. Repeat this process on all of your stock systems to ensure they are all fully updated with all of the maps. See "How to Play" below (if needed).

Modded Xbox (Softmod, TSOP or Modchip)

Modded systems open up the full Halo 2 experience, with all maps and DLC game types available. No disc juggling required.

Skip the Multiplayer Map Pack disc entirely. Instead, use the offline DLC installer from Digiex forums:

  • Download: Halo 2 DLC installer (not Halo 2 DLC xISO for Xemu)

Setup Instructions

  1. Extract "Halo 2 DLC.rar" and FTP the "Halo 2 DLC" folder to your Applications or Games folder on the Xbox.
    • On Windows, it's preferred to use 7-Zip to extract RAR files.
  2. Run Halo 2. This will create the required folder on your hard drive: E:\TDATA\4D530064\.
  3. Restart the Xbox.
  4. Run the Halo 2 DLC Installer and install all map packs, game types, and the v1.5 Title Update that matches your Halo 2 game disc region.
  5. Use the "Restart Xbox" option from within the installer.
  6. Launch Halo 2 and check to make sure you see v1.5 on the title screen in the lower right corner of the title screen. If not, FTP into your Xbox and delete the following folder (E:TDATA\4d530064\$u), and reinstall the update 5 that matches your game disc.
  7. Repeat this process on all of your stock systems to ensure they are all fully updated with all of the maps. See "How to Play" below (if needed).

Networking Setup

Plug each Xbox into the Ethernet switch or router using standard Ethernet cables.

  • Reminder; this is a networking switch. Do not plug your Xbox into a Nintendo Switch (you’d be surprised…).
  • You must use an Ethernet crossover cable if you're connecting exactly two Xboxes directly together.
  • Whether you're using a switch or a router, your Xbox consoles should see each other now.
    • IP addresses do not matter for Xbox system link
    • A simple unmanaged switch works just as well, since Halo 2 uses Layer 2 broadcasts to find other Xboxes.
    • Need router help? Try SetupRouter.com or the /r/HomeNetworking subreddit.

How to Play

Once your Xbox consoles are connected and running Halo 2:

  1. On one Xbox, select:
    • System Link > Choose a profile > Create New Game > Game Setup > Choose your map & rules.
    • Once everyone is ready, start the game.
  2. On the other Xboxes:
    • System Link > Choose profiles > Select the hosted game in the Available Games list > Join the host's pregame lobby, ready up, and let the LAN chaos begin.

Remember, trash talking your friends is part of the experience. Throw out compliments on nice plays to confuse them and psychologically make them weaker, and tea-bag everyone you get a chance to!

Wrap-Up

Whether you're running stock hardware or rolling deep with softmods, Halo 2 LAN parties still hold up. Fewer cables than expected. More shouting than you remember. Absolutely worth it. Happy fragging!
