In 2003, Capcom reached out to Steel Battalion fans that they could apply to a beta test of the game. The beta titled Steel Battalion: Line of Contact Pilot Test, also known colloquially as the Pilot Test or Beta, launched on Monday, November 25th 2003 and the two game modes that were active during the beta test were the Campaign mode which ended on December 24, 2003 9:00 am and the second game mode was Free mission mode which was extended and ended on January 6, 2004. A special event was held on the 6th of December 2003 during the Steel Battalion Pilot Test which put the beta users VS the Steel Battalion Development Staff.
Only 1000 copies were produced and distributed from CAPCOM for the Steel Battalion Line of Contact Pilot Test. 100 sent to the US and 100 sent to the EU regions, 800 were produced for Japan. All 1000 copies were region free. As this beta was only compatible with the Xbox Live service as a mode of play, the discs in existence today are purely collector items. Xbox Live replica projects, such as Insignia, allow the use of these discs to be played online today, though they hold no advantage over the completed version of the game.
