Hybrid discs are discs that can be played natively on both original Xbox and Xbox 360.
Those discs are technically OG Xbox discs (XGD1). Their XeMID and their ringcode, is using the original Xbox's standard. However, they contains the executable files for the two consoles (default.xbe for the OG Xbox and default.xex for the Xbox 360), as well as content for both (either content that can run on the two Xbox, or duplicate content, one for each console).
This system was never used for standard retail games. It was only used for releases close to the 360 release date, that needed to promote the Xbox 360 while still being playable on the older Xbox. There were two kind of hybrid discs :
- Official Xbox 360 Magazine demo discs, whose discs were still playable on the first Xbox until around the end of 2006.
- The 3 Burger King games, a series of three advertisement-based video games sold at Burger King. The games were sold as part of a promotion during the holiday season from late November until December 24, 2006.
List of every Hybrid Disc
| The Xbox magazine had a lot of localized releases, under sometimes totally different names and number (for exemple, Issue 22 could be Issue 24 in another country, and Special edition 3 in a third one), however, a name still had to be chosen to represent the disc. Also, even an individual release can have a different name on the front, spine and disc. |
