Nintendo Switch enthusiasts have an exciting new project to watch: a team of modders is currently developing an unofficial native PC port of the hit platformer, Super Mario Odyssey. A brand-new work-in-progress (WIP) gameplay video showcases how the project is shaping up on PC.
How the Switch Static Recompiler Works
To achieve native performance without traditional emulation, the development team utilizes a Switch static recompiler. This tool translates the game's original code directly into native x86-64 machine code while converting the console's NVN graphics calls into Vulkan API commands.
In the testing footage, captured by Belmante using an NVIDIA RTX 3050 laptop, the game pushes an impressive 58 to 59 FPS while exploring the Cap Kingdom.
Current Development Status & Work in Progress
Because this project is still in its early stages, several hurdles remain. The current development status includes:
No audio yet
Some graphical bugs
Working toward a locked 60 FPS and further optimization
First Android test coming next
Disclaimer: The frame rate is stable; keyboard skills are not, as the controller broke mid-session.
There is currently no official release date or ETA for the unofficial PC port of Super Mario Odyssey. However, as modding teams continue to bring other massive Nintendo Switch titles—such as Super Mario Bros. Wonder and Super Mario 3D World—closer to native PC releases, stay tuned for further updates as development progresses.
