Why Bethesda Games Dominate PC Modding

One of the most interesting discoveries in this ranking is the overwhelming presence of Bethesda's franchises.

Seven of the ten games belong to The Elder Scrolls or Fallout series.

Bethesda's open-world RPG design provides modders with an enormous foundation for experimentation. Players can create characters, explore expansive environments, interact with complex systems, and discover countless opportunities for new content.

Official development tools and years of community-developed utilities have also made these games especially accessible to experienced creators.

While not every Fallout entry was developed by Bethesda Game Studios, the franchises share a strong tradition of community modification.

What About Minecraft and Grand Theft Auto V?

Two of the biggest names in gaming are missing from this ranking: Minecraft and Grand Theft Auto V.

That doesn't mean they have smaller modding communities.

Minecraft has an enormous ecosystem distributed across services including CurseForge and Modrinth, while GTA V has established modding communities on dedicated websites outside Nexus Mods.

Steam Workshop also hosts huge collections of modifications and custom content for supported games.

Because these platforms use different listing systems and categories, combining their totals into a reliable worldwide ranking would require a different methodology.

This article uses Nexus Mods listing counts to provide a consistent comparison.

The Future of PC Modding

PC modding remains one of the most important reasons games can survive long after their original release dates.

Baldur's Gate 3 and Cyberpunk 2077 demonstrate how quickly newer games can develop substantial modding communities, while Skyrim, Fallout, and Morrowind show that older titles can continue evolving for decades.

As community tools improve and creators become more ambitious, the line between small modifications and entirely new gaming experiences continues to blur.

For many PC gamers, completing a game is only the beginning.

Which game do you think has the best modding community in 2026? Is Skyrim still king, or does another game deserve the crown?

Share your thoughts and stay tuned to GlitchMod for more PC gaming news, mods, glitches, and community discoveries.
