PlayStation Vue (PS Vue) is a decommissioned Sony streaming app that can be installed manually with a kernel exploit (jailbreak) or through the system backup and restore feature, which can be used to jailbreak the console with the VueAfterFree exploit.

Initial Internet Settings

With the possibility of new exploits being found on your current firmware, you can disable automatic updates by blocking Sony's servers to prevent your console from automatically patching any existing exploits with firmware updates. Blocking these servers is even more important with VueAfterFree, as leaving them unblocked has the potential of automatically updating (and thus breaking) the Vue application.

When going online on your VueAfterFree console, be it while exploited or not, these things will help prevent firmware updates and game updates from downloading or installing.

There are other methods of blocking updates (seen in the Blocking OFW Updates article), but they require a jailbreak to access, so this section of the guide will just showcase the basic settings you can set before jailbreaking.

Basic Settings

  • Navigate to Settings → System → Automatic Downloads and Uploads, and uncheck "System Software Update Files" and "Install Automatically".
    • You may also want to disable "Application Update Files", as it will only install retail game update files. These are incompatible with backup copies of games, and can only be used with either disc copies of games or legitimate PSN copies of software.
  • It's also recommended to turn off rest mode internet connectivity; you can turn off this feature by navigating to Settings → Power Save Settings → Set Functions Available in Rest Mode and unchecking "Stay Connected to the Internet".
    • This is mainly because the PS4's Rest Mode can still download and install software updates regardless of your Automatic Download settings.
    • Jailbreaking with a HEN before enabling Rest Mode will still block updates in rest mode, but not in the unmodded system software's rest mode.

Using a DNS

Exclamation-circle-fill.svgSome ISPs (Internet Service Providers) will block all custom DNSes and will not allow the user to use these DNS addresses. If this is the case in your situation, you can still continue with jailbreaking your console normally, but be cautious when your console asks or tries to download software updates before jailbreaking.

Custom DNS servers block both firmware and game updates (all PS/Sony connections).

  1. Navigate to Settings > Network > Check Connect to the Internet, then Set Up Internet Connection and:
  2. Connection: Wi-Fi or LAN cable
  3. Set Up: Custom
  4. IP Address: Automatic
  5. DHCP Host Name: Do Not Specify
  6. DNS Settings: Manual
  7. Primary DNS: 62.210.38.117 (Leave the secondary blank as it is.)
  8. MTU Settings: Automatic
  9. Proxy Server: Do Not Use
  10. Test the internet connection; if you get an IP address, it's working. (The internet connection test failing does not indicate that it actually cannot connect to the internet; it just means the PS4 cannot communicate with Sony servers, which is the point of the DNS.)
    • A quick way to check is to go to Settings → User's Guide/Helpful Info → User Guide and see if it redirects you to the exploit page. Do use the first point above if you are in that situation.

Installation Methods

Extended Storage & Save Resign (Without Jailbreak)

Exclamation-triangle-fill.svgThis will wipe your external drive.

Extended Storage Setup

A network connection of any kind is required; before trying to run Vue, please connect to a local network, even if it does not have internet. Make sure to check if you're Blocking OFW Updates if it does have internet access.

  1. Download balenaEtcher for Windows, macOS, or Linux, depending on your computer's operating system.
  2. Download the latest VueExtStorage.7z from the repository.
  3. Extract the downloaded .7z file. Inside, you will see a VueExtImg.7z extract it. Inside, you will see a .zip image file.
  4. Connect your Drive to your computer (using a dock/enclosure or spare M.2 slot).
  5. Open balenaEtcher.
  6. Click “Flash from file” and select the extracted .zip image.
  7. Click “Select target” and choose your Drive.
  8. Click “Flash!” to start the process.
    • Etcher will appear stuck at 0% for a while, then at 85-99% for several minutes. This is normal, let it finish without interruption! If you encounter damaged image warnings, reboot your pc, redownload the image.
  9. Go to Settings -> Storage -> Extended Storage -> Applications -> [Press Options on controller] -> Move To System Storage
  10. Press X on the Vue App to tick and select it.
  11. Go to "Move" and press X.
  12. Press OK on the prompt to move the app to internal storage. It will then move to internal storage.

Save File Resign Online Version

A network connection of any kind is required, before trying to run Vue please connect to a local network even if it does not have internet, directly after restoring the system backup but if it does make sure you have first read the instructions >. Connection Instructions

  • The OnlineSave requires an active internet connection.
    • In the VueExtStorage.7z you extracted earlier is a folder called OnlineSaveResign and inside it CUSA00960, it has an encrypted save which you need to resign to your current account on the target console. You can do this with a jailbroken PS4 or a Discord bot or Save Wizard. 11695c49_CUSA00960_localstorage.aes has a decrypted save file too. Both can be used and be resigned. There is an empty PS4 folder in the PS4\SAVEDATA create a new folder with your Account ID and inside it place the CUSA00960 resigned save file.
  • To find your current Account ID, move any save file to a USB and see the 16 character folder in PS4/SAVEDATA/XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX. Resign the save file to it.
    • In the root of your USB, place HEN or GoldHEN named as payload.bin. It will be loaded from the /data/ folder in the PS4's hard drive in the future, so you do not need the USB after the first time.
    • After resigning the save file, place it on a USB in the path PS4/SAVEDATA/XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX/CUSA00960 and plug it into your PS4. Make a backup of the save file you just resgined.
    • Go to Settings>Application Saved Data Management>Saved Data on USB Storage Device>Copy to System Storage. Select the Vue save file and move it.
    • Open the application you will be told "This service requires you to sign in to PlayStation Network" press OK to continue and wait a few seconds a screen will appear asking you to pick between a full install and a lite install choose whichever you want. If you choose Lite mode the exploit will always launch as soon as you open the app after the initial prompt. Optionally after jailbreaking run the np-fake-signin payload to avoid the PSN pop-up.

After a successful jailbreak, you will only need to run the app again in the future. Note if using HEN before setting up Auto Close please edit the config.js and add 20 seconds to the close delay by writing 20000.\

System Backup (Without Jailbreak)

Exclamation-triangle-fill.svgThis will wipe your PS4's hard drive of all data. Backup any important data.

A network connection of any kind is required; before trying to run Vue, please connect to a local network, even if it does not have internet. Make sure to check if you're Blocking OFW Updates if it does have internet access.

  1. Download the latest VueSystemBackup.7z from GitHub
  2. Format your USB drive to ExFAT or FAT32.
  3. Unpack the contents of the 7z onto the USB.
  4. Plug the USB into your console.
  5. If you have a real PSN account on the console, go to Settings>Application Saved Data Management>Saved Data in System Storage and back up your saved data to the USB. (Sufficient space required.) If you cannot access the save data, you do not have a real PSN account or a fake activated account, meaning that if you do not jailbreak first, you cannot back up your saves.
  6. Go to Settings>Storage>System Storage>Capture Gallery>All and back up your captures to the USB. (Sufficient space required.)
  7. Go to Settings>System>Back Up and Restore>Restore PS4 and select the system backup there and restore it.
  8. When the console reboots, you will have a fake activated user account and PS Vue and its exploit data.
  9. In the root of your USB, place HEN or GoldHEN named as payload.bin.
  10. Plug the USB into your console
  11. Note: You will only need the USB on the first run or when updating the payload.
  12. Open PS Vue and run the exploit by pressing on the jailbreak button or configure the autoloader.
  13. Optionally, after jailbreaking, run the np-fake-signin payload to avoid the PSN pop-up.
  • User account ID is 1111111111111111; you cannot change it, but you can create another user and fake activate it (instructions below), and then, while jailbroken, you can follow the instructions above for jailbroken users to set up PS Vue while signed into the newly activated account.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Can I run the jailbreak offline?

A: No. PS Vue requires some form of network connection. An internet connection is not required, but you must be connected to a network such as your home Wi-Fi, a mobile hotspot, another computer with an Ethernet port, a network created with a microcontroller like an ESP32, or an Ethernet connection from a repurposed PPPwn device.

If you want a jailbreak that works offline, consider one of the other options listed in Getting Started.

Q: The app crashed! What should I do?

A: Restart your console and reopen the app.

Q: I am getting "This service requires you to sign in to PlayStation Network" even after replacing the save file. How can I fix it?

A: Your Vue app has most likely updated. This usually happens if you are not using a DNS or blocking Sony servers. You will need to delete and reinstall the app.

Q: How can I run a payload?

A: Closing and reopening Vue is required between running JavaScript payloads, but ".bin" or ".elf" payloads can be run one after the other. Select the payload from the UI in the Payload Menu.

Q: Every time I try to open PS Vue, it tells me to update, giving me "Update Now" or "Update Later." Is this removable?

A: Yes, if you set your "Primary DNS" to "62.210.38.117" and reboot.

Q: PS Vue is supported on all versions. Why can’t we jailbreak those as well?

A: This is only a userland exploit. A kernel exploit (such as NetCtrl [aka Poopsploit] or Lapse) is still required.

Q: I am getting a "There is a network communication issue" error.

A: This usually means that Vue has updated or your save file has been reset. You should restore your own profile backup save file.
