A loud fan, hot exhaust, and an overheating shutdown are different observations. Warm exhaust may mean the cooling system is moving heat successfully; a volume change alone does not prove a faulty thermal interface. Begin with ventilation and reproducible symptoms before choosing an invasive repair.
Start with placement
Sony recommends at least 10 cm of free space around each side, unobstructed side/rear vents, and avoiding cramped spaces or long-fibre carpet. It also explains that heavier fan activity in some games can be normal. Compare the console in its usual cabinet with a stable, open location rather than relying on how warm a hand feels near the exhaust.
Use the correct base, feet, or vertical stand for the chassis. Leave room for plugs and cable bends, not merely the plastic shell. Remove items resting on the console. When comparing two placements, keep the game, session length, and room conditions similar so the test answers a useful question.
Routine cleaning
- Fully shut down and disconnect the AC cable before cleaning. Allow the console to cool.
- Inspect the visible vents under good lighting. Photograph substantial dust accumulation so later maintenance has a comparison point.
- Use Sony's low-powered vacuum method around the accessible air vents. Do not push a nozzle into the machine or force debris farther inside.
- Clean the surrounding shelf and cables before putting the console back. Otherwise the same loose dust returns quickly.
- Refit any removed panels and supports correctly, then repeat the original use case.
Do not pour cleaning fluid through the vents, spray lubricant into the fan, or run the console dismantled as a cooling experiment. Those actions introduce new faults and make the original symptom harder to assess.
When fan access becomes a repair
iFixit's original PS5 fan procedure demonstrates removable fan access, unequal screw lengths, and a connector that must be handled by its housing. This is a specific photographed chassis, not a universal screw map for slim or Pro models. Make a positional screw diagram and inspect the connector before lifting. Pulling a cable by its wires or levering against the board socket can turn cleaning into solder repair.
A fan that scrapes, fails to rotate, or has a damaged cable needs different work from a dusty vent. Order a replacement using the original identifier and an explicit compatibility statement, as described in repair triage. Do not select a fan solely by blade count or a claim that it is quieter.
Liquid metal: a separate level of work
iFixit's teardown identifies liquid metal between the APU and cooling assembly. It conducts electricity, so escaped material can short components. Separating that assembly disturbs an interface that ordinary vent cleaning does not touch. The liquid-metal repair guide requires extensive disassembly and careful inspection of coverage.
Do not schedule routine liquid-metal replacement merely because the console stands upright. A photographed repair on one unit does not prove that normal vertical use damages every PS5. Sony provides vertical setup instructions; orientation advice should concern stability and clearance unless an actual inspection establishes a separate fault. Replacing the factory interface with ordinary paste is also not a casual dust-cleaning step.
Document results
Record time until failure, the game or application, any warning, whether power returns immediately, and whether fan noise changes. Persistent shutdowns after basic cleaning should proceed to power/boot diagnosis, with the observations attached. Distinguish a thermal hypothesis from a confirmed repair finding.
