Jailbroken PS5 Runs PS2 Discs Using a Native Emulator Port
While Sony continues to roll out select retro titles through its PlayStation Plus Classics Catalog, recent homebrew breakthroughs show that the PlayStation 5 hardware is technically capable of true Xbox-style physical backwards compatibility.
As reported by Tom's Hardware, modder Sword has released a native port of the PCSX2 emulator tailored for jailbroken PS5 consoles. The setup allows users to play PlayStation 2 games directly from physical discs. When a disc is inserted, the software copies data onto the console's internal storage and boots the game locally—functioning similarly to Microsoft’s backward compatibility approach. Users without a built-in optical drive can also leverage compatible external USB disc drives.
Features, Limitations, and PS3 Support
The homebrew application (PS5SX2) handles multi-region discs and standard game image formats like ISO, CHD, CSO, and ZSO. However, a hardware restriction applies: the PS5’s optical drive cannot read compact discs, meaning original CD-based PS2 software cannot be run through the drive.
Beyond basic playback, the emulator introduces modern enhancements, including:
Up to 6x resolution scaling for crisp 4K output
Configurable post-processing filters
Widescreen and 60fps patches for supported software
Online multiplayer capability via community servers using an emulated network adapter
Additionally, development is already underway for PS3 disc support. When questioned about implementing a PS5 port of the RPCS3 emulator, Sword confirmed that support is actively in development. Prominent homebrew developer Al Azif noted that the disc identification hardware built into modern PlayStation systems was originally designed to recognize legacy media, leaving portions of the underlying framework in place.
