The Game Boy is a handheld console from the fourth generation of video game consoles.
The console was launched in Japan on April 21, 1989 followed by North America on July 31, 1989 and in Europe on September 28, 1990. A model revision — the Game Boy Pocket — is a smaller unit that required fewer batteries which displayed games in black and white instead of monochromatic green. The Game Boy Light was a Japanese-only model that was similar to the Pocket but featured a backlight. Games were also later playable directly on the successor; the Game Boy Advance, along with the Super Famicom and Super NES using the Super Game Boy cartridge, and on the GameCube with the Game Boy Player peripheral.
