Replacement covers and skins are among the most accessible PS5 modifications. The useful result is a secure exterior that still fits its supports, exposes connectors, and allows airflow. Begin by identifying the CFI family; a matching color name does not establish a matching shell shape.
Check compatibility before purchase
Original full-size covers, slim covers, and Pro covers need explicit compatibility. The drive-side panel also depends on whether a disc unit is fitted. A four-piece cover set does not prove that it fits both slim and Pro. Ask a seller to identify the supported CFI family and show the internal clips rather than relying on a photograph of the finished color.
Keep the original panels and supports. Photograph the console before the change, including each side and the disc slot if present. This creates a reference for finding a panel that sits proud, a newly obstructed vent, or a foot that no longer fits. Reversible appearance work is easier to assess when only one item changes at a time.
Cover removal and refitting
Sony's cover instructions require shutdown, cable disconnection, cooling, and correctly installed covers before operation. Original consoles use two large sliding covers. Slim/Pro instructions use four sections identified by the action-button marks on their insides. Follow the illustration for the actual side and orientation; lifting an edge is not permission to bend the whole panel.
- Place the console on a padded, stable table and remove its base or feet as directed.
- Confirm which clips or sliding hooks retain the panel. Compare the replacement's underside with the original before fitting.
- Remove the appropriate cover with controlled movement. If it resists unexpectedly, revisit the diagram instead of levering against the black body.
- Inspect for shipping damage or leftover packaging on the new panel. Align all mounting points and refit it.
- Check the seams around the entire cover, then reinstall the correct support before reconnecting cables.
Horizontal and vertical support
Sony's setup guide shows the original base used for both orientations and slim/Pro horizontal feet. A fitted detachable disc drive uses the long feet, while a console without it uses the short feet. The supported vertical arrangement for slim and Pro uses a separately supplied vertical stand.
The newer stand instructions use different marked holes and an attachment depending on the console family. Do not assume the original packaged base and the newer stand share the same fitting procedure. Tighten the correct mounting screw as directed; an arbitrary long screw is not a substitute.
Choose orientation around stability, space, and cable routing. Sony documents both horizontal and vertical placement. This wiki does not infer universal liquid-metal damage from normal vertical use. A console that has suffered an impact or previous thermal-interface repair needs its own inspection; see cooling and liquid-metal notes.
Skins, paint, and aftermarket airflow claims
Fit adhesive decoration only to clean removable exterior surfaces. Avoid vents, connectors, screw access, moving clips, and the disc slot. Check that an edge cannot peel into a fan opening or catch a disc. If painting detachable panels, work away from the electronics and allow the coating to finish curing before reassembly.
Extra holes, added filters, and replacement cooling accessories change the air path. Treat claimed temperature or noise improvements as claims requiring evidence on the same model. A more open-looking cover can introduce dust or mechanical fit problems. Verify stable support, accessible buttons, clean disc movement, and ordinary operation after the modification. If anything new rattles or rubs, restore the original part and compare.
